DIY Knotted Hair Ties

Sorry for the delay in posts, I’ve just come back from London where I attended Food Blogger Connect (more on that in the next days) and unfortunately fell ill. Now I am trying to get back in the swing of things! :) I’m also trying to figure out a posting schedule to be more consistent.

Today I have a very easy DIY for you to make cute knotted hair ties or twistbands as some people call them.

On my last trips to the US (which have been a while back) I have seen knotted hair ties at shops like Anthropologie and J.Crew. They seemed so cute, were usually very conveniently positioned by the checkouts, where I was very tempted to buy them until I saw the price! There were generally priced at about $15 for 4 hair ties, which I thought was insane! I mean they will be stretching out like any other hair tie and I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on hair ties. I thought they seemed easy enough to make at home for a lot less money!

The fold-over elastic used for these knotted hair ties is much softer, does not damage your hair and won’t leave that annoying crease. They also look very cute as wristbands and are comfortable to wear.

It has taken me quite some time to figure out what the german name is for the elastic used to make these hair ties. If you are wondering too, it is called ‘elastisches Einfassband’. You can find the elastic for very little money at sewing and craft supplies.

What you will need for this DIY:

  • fold-over elastic or ‘elastisches Einfassband’
  • scissors
  • measuring tape or ruler
  • clear nail polish

How to:

knotted hair ties Cut your elastic diagonally to your desired length. I would recommend 25-30 cm but try it out on your wrist first.

knotted hair ties To prevent your hair ties from fraying, lightly brush clear nail polish on the edges and let it dry.

2. To make the knot, form a loop.

3. Pull the open ends of the elastic through the loop.

4. Make sure to leave about 2 cm of trim below the knot.

5. Tighten the knot by pulling on the inside of the hair tie.

6. Voilà! Make a ponytail to show off your cute hair tie :)

knotted hair ties I have been using mine for a while now and I’m very pleased that they haven’t lost their elasticity.
